Over the last few years, artificial intelligence has captured the imagination of the investment world. But the American public is much more skeptical of AI’s promise.
For the second consecutive year, Gallup has asked US adults about their opinions of artificial intelligence. While trust has slightly improved YoY, the vast majority are still wary of AI. Let’s dive into the results.
In general, most Americans (56%) believe that AI will do equal amounts of harm and good. However, 31% believe AI will be more harmful than beneficial. While that’s a -9 percentage point decrease YoY, it’s still two times the share that says its impact will be a net positive (13%).
77% of Americans don’t trust companies to use AI responsibly. That’s a negligible decrease from 2023 (-2 pp). Moreover, 75% believe that it will reduce the total number of jobs.
In what areas are Americans most wary about the use of AI? Large majorities are extremely or somewhat concerned about AI generating financial (71%) and medical (80%) advice. 83% are concerned about self-driving cars. And 85% fear AI recommending which employees a company should hire.
These results match previous surveys we have covered. (See “The Limits of Techno-Optimism.”) Americans are most concerned about new tech that could upend society at large—that would, for example, reshape employment, transportation, or healthcare. Other surveys have also shown that many Americans support government regulation of AI tech companies. Given that tech lash is a bipartisan issue, future regulations may be a real possibility. (See “Tech-Lash Intensifies.”)
Did You Know?
TikTok Ban Dwindles. According to a recent Pew survey, support for a federal TikTok ban has significantly declined in the last year and a half. In March 2023, 50% of Americans supported a ban. Today, that share is only 32%. That’s an -18 percentage point decline. This drop in support has been almost equal among Republicans (-18 pp) and Democrats (-19 pp).
Great cartoon opener!
Thanks for sharing how Americans are responding to AI. Interesting to see the statistics from Gallup.
AI will disrupt Medical, Corporate, Innovation. Those who know how to work with AI will largely benefit. The problem with the US is that more and more younger generations don't like and don't read. They read the internet, but books, research, double cross, fewer, and the AI revolution is going to help those who keep their mind and memory fit reach new levels. For the others ... they will stay even further behind ... as it has happen with every technological leap.
