#1. US: Drug Overdoses Decline

The CDC has released preliminary overdose data for the 12 months ending in February 2024. (CDC)

  • 12-Month Ending Overdose Deaths

    • February 2024

      • Reported: 102K, -6.9% YoY

      • Predicted: 105K, -5.2% YoY

  • Our Take: Drug overdose deaths have steadily declined from their peak in August 2023 (113K). This is due to a decrease in deaths from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids (-5.6% YoY), which make up the vast majority of overdoses. It’s still unclear if this decline is due to a temporary disruption in the drug supply or due to increased enforcement and health campaigns. (See “States Toughen Fentanyl Penalties.”)

  • By region, overdoses are still rising in the western states. Deaths have increased by over 22% YoY in Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, and Washington. But deaths are declining in all other regions. Deaths have declined by over -16% in Indiana, Kansas, Maine, and Nebraska.
