By the Numbers: Overdoses, Births, and Immigration
This week, we have new US numbers on overdoses and births. We also have new vital statistics from Germany and South Korea.
#1. US: Drug Overdoses Decline
The CDC has released preliminary overdose data for the 12 months ending in February 2024. (CDC)
12-Month Ending Overdose Deaths
February 2024
Reported: 102K, -6.9% YoY
Predicted: 105K, -5.2% YoY
Our Take: Drug overdose deaths have steadily declined from their peak in August 2023 (113K). This is due to a decrease in deaths from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids (-5.6% YoY), which make up the vast majority of overdoses. It’s still unclear if this decline is due to a temporary disruption in the drug supply or due to increased enforcement and health campaigns. (See “States Toughen Fentanyl Penalties.”)
By region, overdoses are still rising in the western states. Deaths have increased by over 22% YoY in Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, and Washington. But deaths are declining in all other regions. Deaths have declined by over -16% in Indiana, Kansas, Maine, and Nebraska.
