#1. US: TFRs by State

The CDC has released 2022 total fertility rates by state. (CDC)

  • Highest TFRs:

    • 2.01 South Dakota

    • 1.94 Nebraska

    • 1.89 Alaska

    • 1.85 Louisiana

    • 1.85 Utah

  • Lowest TFRs:

    • 1.41 New Hampshire

    • 1.40 Rhode Island

    • 1.39 Oregon

    • 1.35 Vermont

    • 1.24 D.C.

  • Our Take: When you look at TFR by state, you notice two distinct trends. First, the long-term decline in fertility has occurred in all states. And the relative ranking between the states has changed very little.

  • Second, red zone states have significantly higher fertility rates than the blue zone. The average TFR for states that voted for Trump in 2020 is 1.78, while the average TFR for states that voted for Biden is only 1.56.
