Clinical psychologist Kristin Carothers is troubled by the Elf on the Shelf’s supposed emphasis on misbehavior, and suggests that parents let the elf “catch” children behaving positively as a way to recognize and reward good behavior. That way, the innocent holiday tradition can be used as an opportunity to foster Homelanders’ social development.
