By year’s end, an estimated 20 million U.S. households will have some kind of smart-home device—double the number in 2012. At the same time, the gee-whiz magic of all-automated homes is wearing off, with many homeowners complaining that these systems often malfunction and overcomplicate once-simple tasks.
