Citing costs, Japan’s government will no longer give its centenarian citizens the gift of a silver sake cup (worth ¥8,000) and instead opt for something cheaper. Last fiscal year, the world’s fastest-aging nation gifted 29,357 centenarians the cup—compared to a mere 153 when the tradition began fifty years ago.
