Japan’s Population Falls for Ninth Straight Year

In 2019, Japan’s population shrank at its fastest pace ever, marking the ninth consecutive year of decline. According to the latest annual estimates, the population fell 0.22%, and the share of adults age 65 and older in the overall population rose to a record high (28.4%).
