Japan’s Population Shrinks by 500,000

The number of births in Japan, which is estimated to be below 900,000, is at its lowest since 1874. At the same time, the number of deaths has risen to nearly 1.4 million, setting the stage for a demographic squeeze that is looming ever-larger as the population shrinks with no end in sight.
