New analysis finds that over the past decade, more than half of department stores (54%) that have left malls have been replaced by “nontraditional” anchors such as grocery stores or cinemas. Thanks to a disappointing retail sector and a shrinking middle class, department stores just aren’t drawing people to the mall like they used to.
