Microsoft will now allow game developers to create cross-platform multiplayer modes, which will let gamers play with friends who don’t own an Xbox. Lagging behind Sony in console sales, Microsoft hopes that enabling consumers to play with any friend—regardless of hardware—will win over today’s interconnected young gamers.
