There are 1,441 fewer U.S. retail bank branches today than a year ago, and 5,439 fewer than at the peak reached in 2008. This drop shows no signs of abating due to the proliferation of alternatives like ATMs and mobile banking, which has led to declines of 5-8% a year in the number of visits to branches.
